60th Anniversary Address Ms. Agnes G. Yeh SupervisorDear Fr. Barrons, Fr. Geitner, Fr. Sloboda, Honored Guests, Principals, Teachers, Alumni, Parents and Students, It is my honor and privilege to welcome you to the Maryknoll Fathers’ School 60th anniversary gala dinner. As we celebrate a significant milestone of the school’s development, I would like to borrow a quotation from Ralph Emerson to describe the journey we have made - “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” When Fr. Peter Reilly founded Maryknoll Fathers’ School on the barren Tai Hang Tung hillside amongst dilapidating wood shacks six decades ago, he probably would not have envisaged where his trail has had led. The momentous changes and monumental achievements, in form as well as in spirit, that the school had since attained give staunch testimony to the exuberant fruits that his brave adventures had borne. The external transformation is obvious. The school’s old neighborhood has been decorously renewed and the primary section relocated to a spacious contemporary campus in the new Sham Shui Po urban center, both snug and serene locales conducive to learning and spiritual formation. Since its 50th anniversary, the school has embraced and implemented many government mandates in education development, and at the same time, accomplished its own vigorous school based programs in arts, science, sports, spiritual formation, and experimental teaching and learning. But the accomplishment that remains to be closest and dearest to our hearts is that we have tenaciously upheld and advanced the Maryknoll Spirit in serving those in need, the pursuance of truth and social justice, and bearing witness to the Catholic faith. We have not faltered in our commitment to bring the best out of students no matter their family background, ability, interest and beliefs, so they would ultimately excel in the marathon of life. A school’s success is not measured by the chronological milestones it achieved but more so by the advances it made to the lives it groomed and the fulfilment they induced. As we celebrate a milestone achieved, I would like to convey, along with my IMC colleagues, a heartfelt thank you to all who have contributed to helping the school reach its goals and dreams; especially to my predecessors, and the school’s devoted teachers and alumni, who have laid the foundation for its thriving. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all who have helped to make this gala event and other 60th anniversary events successful, enjoyable and meaningful. First of all, thank you Fr. Barrons, Fr. Geitner, and Fr. Sloboda for your guidance, advice and support throughout the planning of the celebrations. Second, and most relevant for tonight, a heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Elizabeth Ma Lo and the banquet committee she led. They have worked tirelessly and painstakingly for over a year on the project, making tonight truly enjoyable and memorable. Sincere thanks to all alumni who have contributed time, money, advice, and efforts in supporting the 60th anniversary projects. Whether their names appeared or not in our acknowledgement lists, their contributions are invaluable in making the events endearing and successful. And a special thank you must be given to Mr. Lai Yik Fung, Horace who has kindly volunteered to be Honorary Auditor for all the 60th anniversary celebrations and has offered us many valuable financial management advices. A big, big thank you from the bottom of my heart to the principals, teachers, and school staff, past and present, who have dedicated their days and nights, way beyond their normal call of duty, in the planning and execution of the celebrations. None of the events and projects would have been possible if without their selfless devotion and hard work. Students, along with your parents, thank you very much for contributing to and supportive of all of the celebrations. Your diligence, devotion and outstanding work instilled in us hope and pride that you will become worthy torch bearers of the school as it advances into a new decade of energetic development. Last and the most important, a sincere thank you to all of you present. Some of you have travelled afar from different parts of the globe specially to attend tonight’s dinner. Thank you for being with us to show your solidarity, love and remembrance of this great school. Celebrating the school’s 60th anniversary serves to remind us of the legacy we have inherited and thus our responsibilities to advance it further in the future. As we celebrate one accomplishment, we will make another goal, and another dream, so that we will never stop pioneering a trail that will benefit future trekkers. And if the going gets tough, we will be reassured by the reminder that such efforts will be handsomely rewarded, as it did for Fr. Reilly. Wishing you the Lord’s grace and blessings, now and always. |
